For whatever reason I've been watching poppy South African films recently, including Cape of Good Hope and the very enjoyable Stander. Pipe-smoking pops up more than once. It feels like pipe smoking must be associated with prosperous farmers, particularly Boer ones. Heck, there's even a pipe style named for Boers, the rhodesian.
With so many young pipe smokers in the United States, it will be interesting to see if there's more pipe smoking in American film in twenty years. Meanwhile, get your fix from South African movies.
