I just discovered Mouse Guard, a set of graphic novels (and even a role-playing game) by David Petersen. One of the characters, the epic hero of yore helping the main heroes, is a pipe smoker. You can read my review here, at the ol' personal Giant blog.
Stellar! Reminds me of Redwall. Sadly I remember no pipe smoking in those books, but they were a great deal of fun. Smoking seems like it may be perilous for the furbound beasts!
