The best thing about the cooling weather as we march toward an Upstate South Carolina autumn is reading 'round the fire at dusk. You know, so that it's dark and cool enough that the fire is truly enjoyed, but still light enough to get a good chunk of reading in.
Captain Hornblower's Lydia and the evil El Supremo's Natividad are still locked in mortal combat (this is the third consecutive chapter of awesome combat scenes), but my elder daughter and my wife are primarily concerned with knowing if Lady Barbara is still safe deep in the bowels of the ship.
Guess we'll have to wait another day or two to find out.
The boys love tending the fire and having a little wiggle room as we have our read. I haven't been very good about reading to everyone this summer, so we're still reading C. S. Forester's Beat to Quarters. (Yes, I know it's not very long.) We're just about done with this one, but happily there are several more. The series was one of my favorites when I was young, and I'm really enjoying sharing this one with the kids.
Guess we'll have to wait another day or two to find out.
